Ordinary food but the service stole the show!

BRANDI REED’S 1942 SOCIAL NEWEST MCDONOUGH LOCATION – 1942 ON THE SQUARE opened up a few months ago and I just so happened to be out and about to stop by for happy hour and I’m happy I did.
Although I’ve never experienced their brunch or their original Stockbridge location, if it’s anything like their happy hour at the McDonough location, then I may try it one day. When we walked in, we were greeted with an amazingly warm and helpful staff. They just opened so the restaurant was pretty empty. Great for us!
It was chilly on the inside so we opted to sit outside on the very large patio area by the bar.
THE PROS: Our server, Chuck came over to greet us and ask if we had any questions on the menu. As like most restaurants in the Atlanta and Metro Atlanta area, 1942 has hookah on their menu with a variety of creative flavors. The happy hour menu was very small (honestly one of the smallest happy hour menus that I’ve seen on this side of town) but decently priced and consisted of simple and safe food and drink options. The food was standard American grub and fries. Ordinary food but the service stole the show! We ordered the chicken tacos and fries and a few drinks. The tacos were amazing! I am surprised at how good they were. Our server Chuck and the manager Michael were amazing! They really do go out of their way to make you feel like home and welcomed at 1942 on The Square.
The music was great! Usually establishments with a urban vibe tend to have music too loud for guests to hear each other but 1942 on The Square got the volume just right.
THE CONS: My biggest con is that I noticed my tortilla wasn’t toasted like everyone else’s. Mine was given to me untoasted and the toasted ones looked amazing. Clearly a kitchen oversight but the tacos were good nevertheless. Another con would be the happy hour menu. A good suggestion would be to extend the food menu out a bit to offer a vegetarian option and other cocktail options beside the 1942 Punch and Mai Tai. Other happy hours in the area offer some form of lemon drop or cosmopolitan cocktail along with 1 or 2 wine options on the menu. Which brings me to my next critic, there are cocktails listed on the menu but there aren’t prices next to drink item, as seen in my video. We had to ask for pricing, in which we were told $15 for each cocktail. We went next door to Crust and Craft and noticed other patrons that were at 1942 on The Square there as well. They stated they left because the drink menu isn’t the best especially for the price. I have to agree. 1942 has a full bar but the drinks on the menu aren’t the most popular or creative for what they are charging, meanwhile just a few feet away, Crust and Craft has an amazing drink menu at a better price point.
Lastly would be the price of the hookah. Hookah at 1942 on The Square starts at $30 and $15 for a refill while others in the area range from $19-$25 and $10 for the refill. Maybe not a big deal if you’re not looking for a all in one spot where you can get great food options for happy hour, a great drink menu options and vibes but if you have to get food at 1942 then have to walk down a few feet to Crust and Craft for drinks then this probably isn’t the place for that. But if you’re looking for limited and simple food and drinks options for happy hour with great customer service then this is the place! I would come back again!
